Ms. Velazquez teaches English skills from Upper School Prep (USP) through students in their junior year. She says writing is her passion, and she loves teaching others how to develop their writing skills.
“I think that it is such a wonderful course to offer because, you know, English classes, they can’t bear it all, and so all my classes are just kind of developing that ability and strength in writing.”
Ms. Velazquez grew up in a small city named Southington, Connecticut, and attended a college prep school, Northwest Catholic High School, in a big city with about 500 students. Being able to attend a college prep school, she felt well-prepared to attend Loyola University of Maryland as an acting and musical theater major, and later picked up studio art, ultimately becoming a singer.
But when COVID-19 and Zoom classes occurred midway through her freshman year of college, she didn’t like taking theater classes over Zoom. So, naturally, she gave a writing major a try and ended up loving it.
“I had a very supportive writing teacher, so I continued and decided to pursue that instead.”
She then ended up majoring in both writing and studio arts, which landed her the role as a teacher.
Ms. Velazquez wasn’t expecting to become a teacher, so she was nervous starting her first year of teaching at Jemicy. Along with teaching, Ms. Velazquez has a love for anime; her favorite show being “Attack on Titan”. She even hosts an Anime Club and a Pen Pal club at Jemicy.
The Jemicy community makes her feel welcome, and she plans to continue her career in teaching.
