New Jemicy Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Holback

Outside of teaching U.S. History, you can find him talking about sports or helping his students. Jemicy history teacher, Mr. Holback grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, more specifically Reisterstown. For High School, he went to Beth Tfiloh and for college, he went to Missouri Valley College for his undergrad in business and marketing and played Lacrosse there too.

I asked Mr. Holback how he got into teaching. He mentioned, “It’s an interesting story. It goes back all the way to when I started playing lacrosse.” Teaching and working with kids was something he really enjoyed. “It brought me joy to help out kids with learning issues that were doubted by people all around them.” He wanted to help them achieve their goals. As he kept coaching more and more, he realized this is what he ultimately wanted to do, not only coaching but teaching neurodiverse learners. He wanted to have time to still be a coach, but looking at career paths, everything led to teaching. He explains how he had to get his certification through CCBC. He also told me, “One of the kids I had taught for many years…[his] mom was a special education professor at Towson University. She saw how well I worked with her son, having Asbergers. She was the one who essentially pushed me into this career path, in which here we are today!”

My next question was why does he teach history, more specifically U.S. History? He said that he’s always been fascinated with World War l and World War ll. “More specifically, learning how our country was built and understanding society.” He likes talking and teaching about current history and what our country has become. He mentions that a lot of people have influenced him over the years, “my parents, who were continually pushing me to find what was best and finding a job that leaves you satisfied at the end of the day.” Many others and I think Mr. Holback has been a great addition to Jemicy!
