The 72 Seasons are nearing

Metallica’s new album “72 Seasons” with three new songs, “Lux Æterna,” “Screaming  Suicide,” and “If Darkness Had a Son,” has hit the airwaves to the surprise of all Metallica’s fans. In late November, Metallica put out the song “Lux Æterna” and shocked the fans with the return of their favorite band since the album “S&M2” in August of 2020. The overall thought from fans was, “What the heck?!” There had been no announcement of the new song or album, and not even a day later, Metallica announced that they would be going on across the Americas and Europe. Along with that, the announcement of the 72 Seasons album shocked fans, quoting Blabber Mouth magazine Metallica’s lead singer James Hetfield, 72 Seasons came out of a book I was reading about childhood, basically, and sorting out childhood as an adult,” he also said, “72 seasons is basically the first 18 years of your life.” In a way, you could take the title of this album as almost a story from the band’s childhood.

Almost a month after Lux Æterna Metallica released Screaming Suicide, which took a darker approach to the thought of 72 Seasons. Hetfield said, “Screaming Suicide addresses the taboo word of suicide,” he also said, “The intention is to communicate about the darkness we feel inside. It’s ridiculous to think we should deny that we have these thoughts.” the overall point of the song is more understood through these quotes. I feel that, however, older fans may not like the new song style they’re hearing they can still understand what Hetfield meant by this song. Quoting some of the song’s lyrics, Terrified in sleepless nights caught in spotlight dead to rights isolate and fight your mind telling you you’re left behind! Out of all the lyrics in this song, this one seems to tell the most about its nature of it.

About a month later, on March 1st, Metallica released my favorite song yet, “If Darkness Had a Son.” James Hetfield said in an interview on the Metallica Youtube channel, “There has been a lot of darkness in my life and our career and things that have happened to us. But always have a sense of hope and have the light that is in the darkness and without darkness, there is no light.” You can understand the song through the lyrics, If darkness had a son here I am temptation is his father if darkness had a son I bathe in holy water temptation leave me be. This lyric almost tells a story in itself, but there are many ways to interpret it but with the quote from Hetfield it gives the lyric more exposition.

Apart from the lyrics of these songs, Metallica has taken a new approach to the sound of the new songs that has a more modern tone compared to their older songs like “One” or “Ride The Lightning,” released in the 80s. I believe Metallica needed a modern approach to attract new fans and bring back old fans with a new tune. In the end, Metallica is back and is just as good, and I can’t wait for new songs and awesome tunes.
