Mr.Epstein, the New Dean of Students

Mr.Epstein

He can often be seen patrolling the hallways or talking with staff around the building; Mr.Epstein’s transition to the Dean of Students has been going well.  In his words, “It’s going really well. I have amazing support from Mr. Palmerieno, Ms.Heard, and a lot of support from Mr.Frances, who had my job last year.” Overall, Mr.Epstein, the New Dean of Students has had a good transition with lots of support.

As some may think, the Dean of Students’ job is to enforce the dress code rules and Jemicy’s phone policy, but there is a lot more work than just that. The Dean of Students’ job is not just to make people follow the rules but also to make being at Jemicy enjoyable for students. For instance, he advises the new student orientation and helps make dress-down days and pep rallies happen. He also plays a massive part in the workings of the SGA, helping build the Jemicy community. While interviewing Mr.Epstein, I asked him how he felt about his new position. He said: “I am truly grateful for it. I have been working here for 17 years, and this is where I want to be, and I could not be happier”

On a different note, I asked Mr.Epstein, who is also the coach of women’s basketball what his hopes are for the new season. His response was “To win,” of course, but also, “ the girls worked super hard last year, and all I want from them this year is success even though it may not be winning.’’ it will be exciting to see how the Jemicy team does this year under the coaching of Mr.Epstein.

When talking about his inspiration for teaching Mr.Epstein replied “My mom. if it were not for her I would not have passed high school and certainly not college, so when she passed away I decided to do for other kids what she did for me.” Mr.Epstein has been sharing the compassion she gave to him and he has shared that with hundreds of Jemicy students over the years. Lastly, I asked what his hopes are for the future in teaching and Mr.Epstein, the New Dean of Students replied “I don’t really think of it like that. I like to take it day by day year by year” he replied but to finish out he said, “I have been here so long and had the experience, and I felt like I could do more, so am going to do this until something new comes up.” Mr.Epstein has had a good transition to the Dean of Students with lots of support and so far into the year we have had a dress-down day every Friday and a school-wide pep rally. So far I think our new Dean of Students is doing a great job.
