235 students at Jemicy, the largest student body to date. In the upper school, we have 211 teens and 24 USP students, or what I like to call the younger cousins of the upper school students. To teach and monitor these students we have 49 faculty members that work tirelessly to keep the students learning and teaching them to be great students. To be admitted to Jemicy, all students go through the admission process and are evaluated to see if they are a good fit. Mrs. Karey is the Head Director of the Department of Enrollment Management and Financial Aid. Mrs. Savage, the Head of the Art Department, responded “Mrs. Karey is full of brilliance. Mrs. Karey is really one of the smartest people I know and I hope to grow up and be like her one day.” Many people don’t know how important the enrollment department is to Jemicy. They are the architects of the school making such a positive impact on the community.

The first step of the enrollment process is a parent, guardian, or school reaching out to Jemicy. They talk to Mrs.Karey or any team members to get information and to see if the student will be a good fit for the school. After the first meeting, they have a meeting with Mrs. Fick Director of Education, and other department heads and have an interview with the parent and the student. Due to the creativity and diverse talent of Jemicy, they have had some cool and wonderful interviews with students. “I had a third-grader come fully dressed up in a pink tutu online. I’ve had students bring dogs and snakes to an interview. I did have a student do a stand-up comedy routine once, they had a monologue and to do some voiceovers for me just for showing an area of interest.” Mrs. Karey has been in every interview and has met every student at Jemicy. All of this work is done in an office in the back of the department that used to be a storage room, in the A-wing across the hall from the technology department.
Many would say that the department is one of the most loved by parents and students. The reason for that is they are the envoy for students from different schools and places to find a community for themselves and find a safe place to learn and nurture their skills. Jemicy would not be the same without Mrs. Karey and the department. This has become a more difficult task she explains, “11 years ago Jemicy Upper School opened in 2011 at 115 students, and this year we opened it to 235. So a lot of growth has happened at our Upper School, which was acquired later in the early 2000s. Jemicy has been growing this year and the student body is now 450 strong. Which is huge.” Due to Jemicy being a school for students with various needs many students come in at different grade levels. She states that this has been one of the busiest years for the department in part due to COVID and also the growing size of students applying to Jemicy. When Mrs. Karey started in the enrollment office there were only three staff members, now there are six.

With such growth, the department is heading into a challenge, but the department is up to the task and is ready for anyone who would like to come to Jemicy. As our admission page on the Jemicy website says “We look forward to welcoming you to Jemicy School and partnering with you through the admission process.” The Jemicy enrollment Office is the bridge between new students towards their new academic life at Jemicy.
