The Rocky movies were an iconic movie series in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s.
The story of Creed 2 picks up 20 years after the original series and follows young Adonis Creed’s life and boxing career. During the Rocky movies, Adonis Creed’s father Apollo has a boxing career of his own. He ends up winning the world championship in the heavyweight class. While the champion of the world he meets Rocky Balboa who is his opponent turned friend. As their friendship blossoms over the series Apollo is challenged by Ivan Drago, a boxer from Russia. During the fight, Drago kills Apollo and wins the heavyweight championship. Rocky, heartbroken over the death of his friend, challenges Drago to a fight. Rocky wins the fight and avenges the death of his friend.
Creed 2 begins with Adonis Creed, Apollo Creed’s son winning the heavyweight championship of the world. Rocky Balboa is Adonis’s trainer during the fight. After celebrating this victory the movie changes directions and pans to Russia. Ivan Drago has a son who is training to become a boxer. Ivan’s son is recruited by a boxing scout and begins fighting on the professional stage. After a few fights, his talent is clear and he challenges Creed to a fight. Rocky advises Creed not to take the fight because Creed has so much to lose including a wife and child while Drago doesn’t and this fact makes him a dangerous fighter. Rocky says that he does not want history to repeat itself and that if Creed takes the fight he won’t be his trainer.
This movie was the best way to revive the Rocky series. It brings back all the rivalry and nostalgia of the old characters perfectly while also creating a story around the new characters. The bout between Creed and Drago is seemingly more than just a fight. It allows a boy who never knew his father because he was taken away from him to get redemption for him by beating the son of his fathers killer.
