When watching The Sandlot, there is one scene that represents everything I love about the movie. That is when Scotty plays baseball with his stepdad. That scene is so powerful because Scotty never gets to see his dad. This scene brings me back to times when I play catch with my dad. We always have so much fun. The Sandlot was created in 1993. The movie demonstrated the importance of strong childhood friendships are and teamwork. When the movie first came out it made just over $30 million and remains a favorite of many to this day.
The Sandlot is known for baseball and childhood friendships. The baseball part of the movie is important because it brings a community together. When the boys hit a baseball over a fence where there is a terrifying beast, most of the boys do not want to retrieve the ball. However, one person jumped the fence, Benny “The Jet” Rodrigues. Scotty Smalls narrates, “only one kid in history has ever attempted what Benny is about to. We were worried, really worried. Even when Benny brought out the secret weapon, shoes guaranteed to make a kid run faster and jump higher, the PF flyers.” This scene is important to the viewer because it shows that no one has jumped the fence since a kid died from trying it.
The movie is about the community and supporting each other.
The movie took place in a small American town in the early 1960s. Scotty is a new kid that just arrived in the neighborhood and desperately wants to fit in. There is a sandlot team with eight players who could be the ninth but cannot play baseball. He asked his stepfather to teach him how to catch, he agrees to it, but he puts it off. One day Scotty finds himself, to his horror, put in left field in the sandlot. A fly ball was descending on his head, which it bounces off of. Hamilton ‘Ham’ Porter then tells him, “ You play ball like a girl!” and the characters laugh at him. That would have been the end of his baseball career, but Benny, the best player, teaches Scotty. Behind the wall at the end of the sandlot is a fence that is being guarded by the formerly mentioned beast, a dog so enormous and ferocious that it became a place where no one wants to go, even if their precious baseballs fly over.
There is a lot of humor in this movie. The most popular lines are “ You are killing me smalls” and “You play ball like a girl!” Most of these famous lines are by Hamilton ‘Ham’ Porter. His character has a really good sense of humor. All of the characters have good humor, and there are a lot of other famous lines.
In conclusion, The Sandlot movie has made kids and adults become better people just by watching it. What I learned from this movie is that you have to keep your friends close and come out of your comfort zone now and then.
