On Tuesday, November 10th, The Jemicy School held its annual Coffee House at the Ivy Bookstore.
As I listened to each written piece with hot chocolate in my hand, I noticed something unique about the readers. Readers came from all different grades, and each prepared themselves in various ways. Some people took deep breaths, some fidgeted with their clothes, and others looked at a few friends in the crowd, smiled, and then began speaking.
This year’s Coffee House was extra important. Lately, it has been hard to feel normal because of COVID. Yes, we are still wearing masks in school but looking forward to The Coffee House had a feeling of normalcy.
Ms. Jones mentioned that a lot more people came than expected; there were nearly 70 people there. She continued and said that this probably motivated the readers to put more emotion into their pieces. She said that The Coffee House was nice because it didn’t happen last year. Covid has taken everything normal and twisted it.

Ally Anderson Mayo, a Junior that participated in the Annual Coffee House, did an extraordinary job reading her piece titled “If, then; maybe.” Despite her stage fright, she spoke beautifully and I know that many people listening enjoyed her piece.
There is more behind some of the reading that happened. I talked with Irene Lipnick about her piece titled “Sister.”
Irene wrote a fascinating piece about what it is like being her brothers sister. Her brother has low muscle tone. Irene has assisted her brother since he was born and has learned a lot from going to all kinds of therapy with him. She wrote this piece last year and had already had her brother read it. Today, he keeps it on his bedroom wall.
When it came to Irene speaking in front of a large audience, she was prepared. She took advice that she gained three years ago from her Uncle, before her Bat Mitzvah. He said, “Give it your all.”
Everyone who spoke at The Coffee House truly “Gave it their all.”
