On a chilly day in autumn, the Jemicy cross country team marched out onto their home field course. It was the end of the season and the team was well acquainted with running and was better than they were at the beginning of the season. Jemicy would go on to beat 2 out of the 3 teams at that meet.
This season has been the best ever season for the Jemicy cross country team. The team was comprised of 23 runners with only 3 returning members of the team. This meant that Jemicy had 20 new runners and a lot of potential. Liam Christopherson, one of the three returning members of the team commented that “this season has had a lot of improvements from the last and I really like having so many new runners.” With the help of Ms. Jesse, the cross country coach, and returning runners like Liam who had experience with running, the team was able to make fast progress.
In the first-ever meet that Jemicy had on September 20th, the team had one win and two losses. Despite getting 3rd out of the 4 teams the Jemicy runners kept getting better and two meets later Jemicy took 1st place out of 4 teams at the Indian Creek course.
This season, the top seven runners who went to the championship race were all new runners. Nate, one of those runners said that “During this season I improved my endurance. My way to improve my endurance was I would stop to take a little break and then I would start to run again and that really helped.”
This year, two people made it into the record books for all-time Jemicy running. Gabe Glick made it for most individual wins with three and myself (Ethan Boston) for the best time for the year with two individual wins. The team as a whole broke the record for the most team wins for the season as well finishing at one of the top places in the conference.
Behind all the successes there was a good sense of community throughout the season. Nate Sobel, a new runner this year for Jemicy said that “I like how everyone was supporting each other.” He also commented that “My favorite moment of the season was the bus ride. The bus rides were always fun.” People were able to have a fun time on the bus rides and everyone enjoyed them. Everyone was very supportive of each other despite the gaps in skill level. People cheered just as much for the person who came in the top three runners for the race as the person who came in 40th place.
This team has broken many records and set the bar high for future cross country teams for Jemicy. Aside from the successes the friendships and community built around the team were just as important. Everyone who was part of the team will remember this season and will always be glad to be a part of it.
