When Mr. Pannell was in his junior year of high school, he was the same person we know today: energetic, outgoing, and nice to everyone he interacted with. During that school year, he had two teachers that had a massive influence on his life and career. Mr. Amos and Ms. Martin recommended that he get into the field of teaching. Those two teachers showed Mr. Pannell “the powerful relationship you can have with a teacher.” Every time you walk into Mr. Pannell’s class he has a smile on his face and a ton of energy. Having that energy every single day is one of the major reasons why he is so beloved here and has been able to create that powerful relationship with his students that he experienced with his teachers all these years ago.
He started his teaching career at another school, where he taught for three years with Mr. Trudell, another math teacher at Jemicy. Unfortunately, that school went under and had to shut down. He was considering getting out of teaching entirely and possibly going into economics until he got a call from Mr. Trudell about an opening as a math teacher at Jemicy. He did the interview and got the job. Six years later he is still teaching here and says he “absolutely loves his job” and “wouldn’t want to do anything else in the world” because “every day is a new day, especially at Jemicy. I absolutely love the social environment here and interacting with the kids here.”
Pannell doesn’t only teach math. He also coaches for some of the sports teams. He used to be the boy’s JV Basketball coach, and now he is an assistant coach for the girl’s varsity basketball team. With the exception of golf, Jemicy has not won a single championship in any sport in 10 years. Despite that fact, Pannell loves being a coach at this school and has some great memories. One example he gave was the former student who was the “ultimate hustle teammate who did everything except score. He got rebounds, steals, and assists but hadn’t scored the entire season.” In the final game of the season, the ball finally went in the hoop for him. Unfortunately, it was the wrong hoop. He went up for a rebound and instead of taking it up the court for the new possession, he put it back up and into the hoop and scored for the wrong team. Even though it was a massive mistake, both teams loved the moment and cheered. Nobody was upset at the player, it was a funny and great moment for both him and the team.
Mr. Pannell is definitely one of the most beloved teachers in this school and is never in a bad mood. One of the most energetic and outgoing teachers I have ever had and he is truly a great educator who cares about his students. I guess it’s true what they say: some things never change.
