Double Dad: Is Netflix Getting Better?

Netflix’s pandemic releases are starting to get better.

The latest movie I’ve caught on Netflix is called Double Dad. Double Dad is about a teenager, Vicenza, who sneaks out of her hippie commune (yeah you read that right) when her mom is away to find out who her father is. Of course this would be a life changing event, but this description reminds me of something else.

Mamma Mia anyone?

With a 5.6/10 on IMDb and a 59% audience review on Rotten Tomatoes, I’d have to say I disagree with these low ratings.  This movie was very good in my opinion.  The acting was amazing and the movie was very funny at times, while sad in others. It made me smile, but it also made me angry.

As I mentioned before, the plot of this movie sounds like Mamma Mia, but it’s different in a few ways. First of all, it’s not a musical. Second of all, it was voiced over in English, but was filmed in Portuguese. Also, there’s a relationship developed throughout the movie instead of a marriage. Lastly, there is no “third father” in the movie.

The funniest part of the movie was the mother when she was in India. I know this is very, VERY obscure, but I don’t want to give many spoilers. Also, the romances in this movie were adorable, and some were hilarious. The dynamic between actors and characters really shined and promoted the themes of family, whether biological or chosen, friendship, and unconditional love. Maisa Silva did an amazing job with the emotion in Vicenza. She made viewers feel for her throughout the entire movie. Everything she said and did was specific to her character, her portrayal of Vicenza was believable, and you couldn’t tell that she was acting in a movie (like some other Netflix movies — *cough* A Week Away *cough* — did).

I’d definitely recommend this movie to everyone. It’s a feel good movie and very entertaining. 10/10 from yours truly.
