It’s been over a year with no sports for the Jemicy community. COVID-19 struck the Jemicy School leaving the institution without athletics. However, spring sports have resumed and are back in action. Men’s lacrosse and golf have returned along with the new additions of a women’s lacrosse team and baseball.
Men’s Lacrosse
Men’s lacrosse played one game last season before the shutdown. Due to the pandemic, men’s lacrosse needed to take a few precautions in order to play. The guys will either have to wear a face shield or mask while practicing and playing in games.
Many teams started getting used to the rules and practicing on March 1st, however, Jemicy didn’t.
Coach Jared Bierer said, “It makes it hard on our team. We are three to four weeks behind on setting up our offense and defense. Getting into lax shape and building chemistry with new and old players.”
Another challenge that the men’s lacrosse team faces is lack of bodies.
“Out of 54 freshmen, we have one lax player. We are in the MIAA and we need to start getting students interested in Jemicy sports. Mark Palmerino has worked hard to build this program the past 6 or 7 years. We just need more athletes. Men and women.”
According to coach Bierer, three players to look out for this season are, captain, Cole Snyder ‘21, Will Erwin ‘21 and Jake Baumann ‘21.
Some goals for this season are to, “Build team unity. Make this season about the senior lacrosse players and leadership,” according to Bierer.
The lax guy’s two key games this season will be against Beth Tfiloh and Key School.
“We have a really up beat group this year. I want us to stay positive and win when we can.”
Golf
The golf team is back in action this spring as well. Seniors Jayven Hull, Zach Barton, Dixon Colston, and Kilburn Russo look to lead this team towards another championship.
According to coach Jeremy Bryant, the team hasn’t needed to take as many precautions as other sport teams, due to golf being “naturally spread out.” Coach Bryant said the team lost some key players to graduation, but the team is still poised for success.
“Well, last year was going to be our best team ever on paper and we lost some seniors to graduation. But like I said, we reload not rebuild.”
The biggest challenge for the golf team this season is the lack of practice time and the weather.
