Over the past couple of months, hate crimes against Asian Americans have been on the rise. Most people are blaming the Covid-19 pandemic that originated in China. Asian Americans have been brutally beaten, shot and killed, and even run over with cars. Events like the massage parlor shooting in Atlanta have completely devastated the Asian community.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau over 20 million Asian Americans live in the United States. Anti-hate rallies and protests have been held in places like California and other states attempting to shine a light on the emerging problem
Last week in Manhattan, a 65-year-old Asian American woman was physically and verbally assaulted. Police said the suspect “made anti-Asian statements” as he kicked the woman.
The man who committed the violent attack was on parole after serving time for the murder of his mother back in 2002. The man has been arrested and charged with provoking a violent attack on an innocent defenseless woman.
The FBI even warned in March 2020 that hate crimes against Asian Americans could potentially increase due to the Coronavirus before any hate crimes ever happened. In 2020, hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased 150% in places like Los Angeles and New York City.
Hate crimes against Asian Americans may only get worse as the pandemic drags on. There needs to be more robust police presence in more area with greater Asian American populations. That is our best shot at minimizing these violent attacks.
