Mr. Philip Macek is a new teacher here at Jemicy and The Frisbee recently asked him a few questions to find out what makes him tick. Welcome to the Jemicy community and we’re glad your joining the Moose!
- Where are you from?
Answer: I grew up in Ellicott City; I still go back there as often as possible, especially to the historic part.
- How long have you been teaching? Where have you worked previously to Jemicy?
Answer: I have been teaching for 22 years. Before I came to Jemicy, I taught for Baltimore County Public Schools and two other private schools; I also taught at UMBC for 9 years as an adjunct professor.
- What subjects do you teach?
Answer: I teach English 9 to some wonderful freshmen and Philosophy, which is an elective open to impressively analytical juniors and seniors.
- Where did you go to school and what did you major in?
Answer: I went to Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. I majored in Sociology, but I studied English and Education in graduate school at Loyola University.
- What kind of kid were you in school? Besides what kind of student you were, any extracurricular or sports activities?
Answer: I was usually quiet and got mostly As and Bs. I had a good group of friends. I played baseball and intramurals, and I wrote for the school newspaper and submitted poems to literary magazines.
- What brought you to Jemicy?
Answer: A change of pace and a chance to have more autonomy in the classroom. Plus, I have met wonderful people — both in the interview process and during the new faculty orientation. I feel very fortunate to be here!
- Is this how you imagined your first year at Jemicy?
Answer: Hard to answer. I love that we were able to be in-person for a good stretch. It was really great to get to know the students before we went virtual. I would imagine in “normal” times, there is an amazing sense of community. I am looking forward to that–going to sports games and school plays, and concerts! I can’t wait, really.
- What is your favorite food?
Answer: Anything Italian. I get along with pasta very well.
- Do you have a pet?
Answer: No, but I am considering a dog. Dogs are awesome!
- Where is your favorite travel destination and why?
Answer: The beach. I like Ocean City and Bethany, but I certainly wouldn’t turn down a trip to the Caribbean.
